permission to record | ||

knowing in advance you permission to record a show, is a huge relief as a taper.
being able to bring your gear in and set up without a hassle usually makes for a much more relaxed day/night. sure, grabbing a line out of soundboard can sometimes be great - but I have had a few recording go wrong when say a bass, or one guitar was not run thru the board, and was powered from stage amps only for smaller gigs - you get almost nothing from that instrument then. having permission to record lets you bring in a couple sets of mics, and choose the most approprite set up and mix for your location. he'll make some killer recordings, I feel good about that.

Hopefully they've been archiving the SBD mix and a "audience" (AUD) recording from the soundboard area. That was the plan last I knew... And honestly, I actually prefer a good audience-centered recording so I can hear what the room sounds like, the crowd, and hearing the music just fill the space. |

Now, that sounds quite "touchy-feely" if you ask me, but you've got to have some basic knowledge of how to read the size of the space, where the speakers are, and where the "sweet" spot is going to be. From there, you've got to pick out the right mic configuration to give the most accurate representation of what everyone is hearing--that's always my goal. I want my recoridng to sound as close to what it sounded like live. Doesn't always work out that way. Hopefully I won't be relegated to a corner and can get set up somewhere in the center and get a nice little recording. I too have had problems with SBD patched recordings, mainly cause they don't always give a true picture of the soundscape. Sometimes you just need to hear that guitar echo a little and hear the crowd hootin' and hollerin' for more during a killer solo. It all comes down to preference, and really I like mine sounding a little more like it did from my seat than anything else. We'll see what kind of set-up and recording I get on the 10th. |

All this technical mumbo jumbo is over my head... glad you recordin' folk know what you're doin'...
I would say if I have a preference as a listener of MANY of these recordings - I agree that I like when it sounds through speakers like I never left the show. I think the audience energy is a major part of what the show itself sounds like... isn't it? |

Long as you're not standing next to "That guy"! "I love you Grace!!!" Now listen to Me sing!

I have been recording next to "that guy/girl" at a few shows - seems they always find the exact wrong time

Yes, I agree with the general consensus. In many cases, I prefer a kick ass audience tape to a SBD recording. But at show like this one, a board patch would
probably be pretty nice, because it's just gonna be Grace, and whatever she's playing will most certainly be going through the board. But when using
mics, yes you have to suss out the scene and decide the best approach to take. As I have stated on this board before, even when open taping is allowed, I
don't always tape in the open. Sometimes the official taping spot is way in the back, or off to the side, or something else less than ideal. The
Independent in SF for example is a pretty decent venue, but when taping is allowed, tapers must set up in the balcony, and it just doesn't sound that great
up there. I've recorded GPN twice at the Independent and both times I just went stealth on the main floor, what I deemed to be the "sweet spot"
and got a much better recording than I could have from upstairs...
So, enough of the technical mumbo jumbo! Good luck on the 10th! I hope it all works out... Shark |

I am pretty sure that whoever is doing the sound for Grace will be recording out from the SBD.
Plus, with a small place like this and potentially some great acoustics in the room, an audience tape could sound pretty nice. I'm just hoping I can get in early enough and grab a sweet spot. |

I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get Mr. Greppson in early :-) - Just to set everyone else's expectations - this show will NOT be appearing on
archive.org or btree or anywhere else. They're handling Grace solo show taping policies differently than the full bands.

Joester, that decision would certainly not be up to me. Tell you what, if you can make it I'll let you in free - how's that?

Mojo -
thanks for the EXTREMELY kind offer - and I wish we could take you up on it. geographically, a weekend trip to vermont is tough - a lot of travel time to get there from Arizona. I'm sure it would be a weekend of memories to last a lifetime, but we just can't pull that off right now. we have plans to travel to the UP Michigan (LakeSuperior) in mid-August (cancer calls) and a few other trips for Sept and early Oct. We'll be looking for GPN to do a southwest swing in late October or November. 2007 and 2008 brought GPN to Arizona in November, so we hope the tradition continues..... Again, thanks for the kind offer. have a GREAT July - much appreciation for your efforts!

I'd love to get a recording of the show. If any taper is willing to share, I'd be more than willing to pay or trade. I'm going to be there, but I
know it will be a show I'll want to listen to over and over. I made a trip to Bennington today and without realizing it found myself at the college and
right next to the carriage barn. I got my ticket as soon as I got home.

Yeah, I'll be at the Blues and Lasers show tonight, the solo show in Bennington tomorrow, and then the Waterfront gig on Sunday. A GPTN filled weekend!
You probably do have some recordings from me at SPAC as I try not to miss too many shows there. See you tomorrow night! And anyone there from the "Posse" should come say hello. I'll be one of the few people with a big metal stand and mics. Haha. |
