Rutland, Vermont is not in the middle of nowhere. It just seems that way when the last 45 miles to get there is 2 lane. It has it's own little slice of
urban sprawl east of town on Rt 7, and a nice little downtown area, boasting a little honey of a theater, The Paramount. Fully restored to the splendor of its
gilded heyday, and seatin 850 on two levels. And across the street, a hippy coffee/sandwich shop, as well as a loud bar featuring Italian food. I opt for
coffee and a sandwich.
Inside the theater, I see Jan, Caroline, and Todd in the Royal Box on the right side, and I slide in to glom on to the space...I can lean/sit on a sturdy rail all evening. View to the whole rythmn section is blocked by the speaker stack, but it is close to the stage. I'm glad to hear Dave say there is no opener, as I do have that pesky lil 3 hour ride home, almost half 2 lane. Nancy and Jay are sitting with Dave in Row 3.
The show tonight has a very easy feel to it. I think the tone was set by opener "Wait for Me" with Susan in a sparkly black cocktail dress. The crowd gives her some absolute silent space in which to work some sweet, quiet moments throughout the evening. Susan seems particularly chatty, and in the intro to "learn The Hard Way", going so far as to tell a story as how BB King had sex at age 8, and has 20 kids, who he has/will put thru college. "And that's why he is still touring today" Funny story, and what are the chances that there would ever be an 8 year old girl sitting front and center? Tonight there was...
With no opener, the band splits into 2 sets, which doesn't happen too often
Highlights tonight:
Wait For Me; great opener to draw an older crowd right in
Little By Little: Dave Yokes, what a sweet tone
Break in The Road: Susan and Dave bring guitar heaven to Rutland
Just Won't Burn: Silent hush at the end
Back To The River: I know it's Ron, I just can't see him
For No One: Pin drop
Voodoo Woman; By request

After the show Ron comes back out and says hello to many, and is particularly glad to see Todd made it up from the way down south.
We head around to a side door with hopes getting the Posse introduced to Susan. The door opens when a young man and 2 friends approaches and he says he would like to say hello to Susan. Tour manager Mike is right behind the security guy, and asks what his name is, and then allows the three through. I don't know that he saw me, but I'm hard to miss. After the three go thru the door, I start through, and the security guard literally shuts the door in my face. He holds it about a foot open, and I motion to the pass Susan left for me, and I said "doesn't this get me thru the door? " He didn't know and would check. I only saw one other person with a pass, so I don't know what the deal is. We wait for about 10-15 minutes and decide to head out and around to the bus. Walking towards it, I can see that no one is onboard, so we hang for another 10 minutes or so, before we all decide to hit the road at 11 PM.
Not quite what I had planned, and I'll make it up at Lebanon...
